CCPrime #55 - March 2018 - The Last of Us

Post by Pam » Tue Mar 06, 2018 5:43 pm

The Last of Us is an action-adventure survival horror video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was released for the PlayStation 3 worldwide on June 14, 2013, and has since been remastered for PS4. Players control Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States. The Last of Us is played from a third-person perspective; players use firearms and improvised weapons, and can use stealth to defend against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus

I just got myself a PS4 to keep in the bedroom (where most of my console gaming takes place), so now I'm much more likely to jump in on the long string of PS games the club is tackling.

I have played this before, but I think it's worth a second play and I hope there will be some good discussion in here!

I should probably start on this one again, too! I had started to play it for the second time earlier last year, and the other day I tried to pick up where I left off, but I forget all the controls! And I'm at a part where you have to make your way through a sea of clickers, so I die almost immediately. Debating whether or not I should just start again, but I think I'll be able to figure out the controls. Heh. I hope there is good discussion here, too. I will try to contribute!

The game has top notch writing and top notching talent doing the acting, but I ultimately did not care about Joel or Ellie. The only characters I got attached to were Sam and his brother Henry. This combined with the AI destroying immersion in stealth sequences made my experience nothing special. Still a solid (A-) game for me since I cannot deny what it does right, but I don't hail as the greatest game of all time as so many people like to do. It's a popular game with couples that I know, though. Whoever isn't playing loves watching the game being played because it is practically an episode of the Walking Dead basically.

To my surprise my favorite part was the limited crafting and I normally hate crafting but few games make it work and this is one of them. The other aspect I loved were the Stealth sections where the AI was not right next to me since when they were they destroyed immersion by having dumb scripting.

I played this one for the first time just a couple of months back. It ended up being completely different than I thought it was going to be for some reason but still very good. I'm not quite on the "best game ever" bandwagon and it's not even my favorite zombie/horror game but it's certainly a game I think everyone should play. The characters and dialog really make it worthwhile and there are some extremely tense moments sprinkled in.

Hopefully everyone that plays it this month has a ton of fun with it, it's a great choice for a club game.

It took me a long time to care about Joel and Ellie. If I'm remembering correctly, it was just after the part with Sam and Henry, when they drive to Pittsburgh (or from Pittsburgh?). It was probably a good 1/3 of the way into the game. Until that point I felt I was just going through the motions, and a lot of the time those motions were frustrating and annoying because I wasn't a fan of the stealth. But if I broke stealth and there were more than 1 or 2 infected still around, I'd die.

I liked the Left Behind dlc more than the full game. I really cared about Ellie and Riley and it has some of my favorite scenes from video games. I hope others play through that as well.

Anyway, I started the game last night. The intro is so well done. I like that you have some form of control as you play as Joel or his daughter, but everything is still very scripted so you see everything the game wants you to see to build up anxiety about what is happening.

Playing through this for a second time, I'm finding I like the story more since I already know and appreciate the characters, but the gameplay is still often frustrating. I don't really like the stealth and the first section where you have to escape from a large room full of clickers with Tess and Ellie was just as frustrating this time around as it was the first.

One thing that really bugged me is some elusive button prompts. I spent a good 5 minutes right near the start of the game feeling really dumb because I was stumped about what to do next. It's right at the beginning of setting out with Tess and she asks you to boost her over a wall. I trying pushing buttons around her, I tried pushing buttons around the wall. I looked round the room in case I missed anything. The button prompt didn't appear until I looked up at the top of the wall (which is not where my attention would be if I was boosting someone... I'd either think of lifting them or setting up at the bottom of the wall to help them over). And then it happened again after the clicker section! Maybe I am dumb for not learning to look up more in this game.

Started my playthrough of The Last of Us yesterday. Looking to complete roughly 1 chapter per day so should be able to get it done by the end of the month.

Happy to have this motivation to replay through the game. I beat it a couple of times on PS3, and then bought the remastered version on PS4 when it was on sale so I could play the Left Behind DLC with the intention of replaying the main story but I never got around to it.

The end of the first chapter still gets to me even though I've seen that scene numerous times.

Also noticed a little girl in the Quarantine Zone chapter holding onto something which I had not noticed before. I'm sure it's not the first time it's been pointed out but I thought it was interesting.

Since you posted this I've been on the look-out for giraffes. I found another one outside the high school in Bill's Town. I'll post a pic later (I'm at work now).

I've now arrived in Pittsburgh in my playthrough. I went through another area I found frustrating in my first playthrough and found it much better this time. It was the Clicker area in the Churchyard. I remember when I originally played I was upset because I has just been handed a shotgun 5 minutes earlier and then it threw me into an area where I couldn't use it, lest I attract the attention of every enemy and be killed. However this time I made use of a lot of nail bombs and molotovs and got through it without incident.

I never noticed the one outside the school! I was always busy running from enemies around the school.

This will be my 3rd playthrough overall after playing through it twice on PS3. There are definitely a few combat sections I found tough the first time around which I found easier the next time I played through.

I tend to have a bad habit that if I make a mistake and break stealth I will restart the encounter and try to find the optimal path through an area.

I’m trying to do that less this time around. That clicker area in the Churchyard I just went wild with the Shotgun. Playing on Normal difficulty certainly helps too.

Just got up to Pittsburgh too. Making good progress.
