Polykill Meta Thread: Ask Q's or make fun of us

Post by polykill_travis » Tue May 02, 2017 1:28 pm

Really just putting this here because other podcasts were doing it and we like doing what cool kids are doing.

But if you do have questions, comments, concerns, or corrections this is a good place for them.

Probably a dumb question, but even dumb words need love. What is your hard-line, definition for a "backlogged" game? Of course you often talk about recent purchases, and technically any game you haven't played, and aren't currently playing, is a backlogged game. But when choosing a game to play, do you put a preference games with the most collected dust?

Does a growing backlog ever scare you away from a new purchase?

What's the the game with the longest backlog tenure for each of you?

Now, what's the game with the largest length-of-time-to-disappointment ratio (game that's been backlogged the longest and ended up being a terribly unfun game)?

I wrote a blog that might answer a few of these: http://www.polykill.com/polyblog/2017/4 ... -greatness

Also, our Episode 33: Backlog to the Basics covers some of this too.

But to save you time- backlog to us just means on deck. We own it and we intend to play it soon. It's an arbitrary way to apply pressure to actually getting around to it in the near future.

For me, yes. In a way a growing backlog of games will keep me from purchasing new games at full price if I'm okay with not playing it right away. Some games I just can't wait to play and have been eager to since it was announced. Others, like Prey for example, I want to play but I'm okay to play it a year from now when it's cheaper.

Longest tenured backlog..hmm. I've always kept a mental backlog as I'm sure most do but as a lover of spreadsheets I can answer that rather specifically as to when I started tracking that sort of thing: Final Fantasy VII.. March 2011. And I'm a door from the final boss but too under powered and stuck :(. In life - I've never completed Super Mario Bros 2, 3, or World. Black eyes on my gaming resume but none of which I want to tackle anytime soon so they're not on the...official Polykill backlog, so to speak.

Your last question is very interesting... recently, Quantum Break got old after a bit. I loved it at first but it eventually became a slog about 2/3's through. It's a short game and probably not a great example but one that comes to mind. I rarely stop playing games I've invested time in even when they stop being fun. It's something I'm trying to do though but I feel the need to justify the time spent for some reason.

Please don't stop with the JustBeatIt ad libs, they're fantastic. Just finished Ep. 50, the Drive!Drive!Drive! one almost made me spit out my drink.
